The book of James works harder than any other book to integrate what we believe with what we do. Even in the first chapter, James wastes little time encouraging the believer to merge the two. James writes,
But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says.- James 1:22
Behind the teaching rests an assumption – living this way makes us more human. When we integrate what we believe fully into what we do the more we find ourselves the creation God designed us to be.
It sounds so simple, doesn’t it? We almost want to ask – why are you writing this? Although so basic, James saw the need for the instruction. When we accept the forgiveness Jesus offers us we find ourselves with tremendous freedom. Suddenly, we ask Jesus to forgive us of our sins and upon receiving that gift we suddenly have an opportunity to rewrite our lives. James wants to help us. Writing to the earliest of Christians he wants to give us some guidance – act according to what you believe.
Now, it is tue this process is never perfect – the forgiveness Jesus gives is never just a one time offer. What James believes, however, is right – when what we believe is right and it becomes what we do the more we become….human.
James knows, the invitation Jesus offers us is one where we become ourselves.
The first steps we take into this life are certainly at first tentative. As we start a new venture in rocktheword.org, I am very aware that the first steps of anything are accompanied by the unknown. It is, however, the nature of faith to know only in part. Using the metaphor of a mirror, Paul put it best. In ancient mirrors – like those in my great-grandmother’s house – if you got right up to them you could actually see through. Paul put the life of faith this way, he wrote;
For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. – 1 Corinthians 13:12
When we step up we see through, and we see the person we can become. As we start rocktheword.org, this is the community I hope we can become – a group of people who step forward to become what God designed us to be.
