The last several weeks have made me aware of the workings of the Holy Spirit. Sabbatical is a reacquaintance with the Holy Spirit and it has me rethinking several Biblical passages. One of them has been from the Bible’s greatest hits, it reads:
“Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” – Matthew 16: 13-16
In church, we call this Peter’s confession of faith. It’s more…
Right after Peter tells us who Jesus is – and don’t you know Peter was shocked to hear the words come out of his mouth – Jesus says this…
“Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.” – Matthew 16:17
What Peter says is the result of the Spirit, and Jesus’ reaction is not just in response to the information Peter conveys, its a reaction to the transformation Jesus witnesses in Peter. God speaks through Peter, and imagine Jesus’ joy to see the Spirit speak through his friend! Now, in the 12 disciples there is not just one Spirit-talker, there are two…
As a follower of Jesus you and I can do this too…the word of God spoken through us.
Recently, I have been talking to friends about next steps in ministry. The experience has been extraordinary. As my friends have prayed they have also taken the additional step to share what they hear God say. In moments I can only describe as heaven-breaking-in, the power of these conversations has been life-changing.
One happened this way…
God has told me….my friend then shared what God said in his prayers.
Feeling a nudge from the Holy Spirit, I said – There is one more thing, isn’t there? You said the first thing God said, what was the second?
He then said the second. How did you know about the second?
Sometimes God talks to us, or as Jesus told Peter – this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.
