Last night, RockTheWord opened our first small group. RTW has as its mission to create and assist innovative disciples of Jesus Christ. To accomplish this end, we connect believers to each other and to those who are building Jesus’ Kingdom in a cool way – all guided by The Spirit, we pray.
Last night was meeting one of group one. We are committed to:
1) Meet weekly.
2) Read the Word.
3) Celebrate Communion.
In time, we pray, God uses us in an extraordinary way, or as I like to think of it – a way that rocks.
Lately my thoughts and prayers surround Acts 2, the birth of the church. When Acts tells us;
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. – Acts 2:42
These words are the birth of the church. It is, however, easy to forget how embryonic this new church was along with the enormity of the task of bringing the Kingdom of God upon the earth.
Part of the small group vibe recaptures the smallness of the ancient church when it picks as its focus an enormous task. A tiny group of people faced with an impossible mission is the Holy Spirit’s homefield. If you are wondering where Jesus is, maybe the thing to do is not search for God, but search for something enormous to do in His name.
One of my heroes, John Wesley, knew the value of a group with a challenge. The founder of Methodism, Wesley put groups together and gave them a powerful task. Each week, they would meet and here are some of the questions they asked each other;
When did I last speak to someone about my faith?
Do I get to bed on time and get up on time?
Do I disobey God in anything?
Am I defeated in any part of my life?
Am I jealous, impure, critical, irritable, touchy or distrustful?
How do I spend my spare time?
Am I proud?
John Wesley was interested in creating innovative, powerful disciples of Jesus Christ and used small groups toward that end. Groups have power, and believers need groups.
Find one. Strengthen the group you are in. Or, if you are interested in forming RockTheWord group #2 – so are we. Be in touch.
