A consistent tenet of Christianity is how in the midst of change God prepares. While in slavery to Egypt God prepped Moses and the march to freedom he would lead. As Jerusalem fell and a life of exile became Israel’s reality, Daniel and others were made ready to stay faithful in the foreign land. Ultimately in Jesus we see this message at its height – in the face of death is life forever.
God, always, is making ready. And in the middle of change the faithful – instead of lamenting or being tossed by chaos – will look ahead to see what is being made ready to bring the next wave of what the Lord would have us be and know.
The other day I was cooking – a favorite hobby of mine – and I was cooking in a wok. If you have ever done this, you know Chinese cooking happens fast. The heat and tempo are high, as spices, meats, and veggies are added in rapid succession. The only way to do this well is to have everything chopped, measured ahead of time, and in the order you will need. Then, as it all comes together, you can focus on the outcome ahead.
The kitchen sheds light on a truth from above – preparation focuses us on the future. The prepared are not swept away by the panic of today. Preparation – prayer, study, disciplines – by their nature move us to tomorrow and bring us to where the Spirit is leading.
In our culture today, much is being redefined. Donald Trump is a conservative? Spotlight wins best picture – does the church have a future?
In my hometown, though, a curious orchestration is underway. Houston is – by reputation at least – the most diverse city in America. Drive around – the world is here. Every language, color, restaurant, fashion – is right here and it causes the faith in me to wonder…
God gathered every nation under heaven once before. In a city, everyone was there. And what happened next would be the time that caused the church to burn with a fire it has perhaps not seen since. Acts 2:5 –
There were many Jews staying in Jerusalem just then, devout pilgrims from all over the world.
God gathered, the Spirit moved.
Could it be today is similar? God is gathering, preparing for what the Spirit will do next?
I believe so. I believe because I know God prepares.
God is making ready, and for our part we simply need make sure when God says go we as the faithful are ready.
